Basic security issues

I need to learn about basic security issues. Where do I start? Thanks for your help.

Start with some of the papers and sites searchSecurity.com points to. Then consider attending a security conference to get a three-day immersion in security topics. CSI -- the Computer Security Institute -- is good. www.gocsi.com has pointers to the Netsec conference in June in New Orleans, and the CSI 28th Annual Computer Security Conference and Exhibition will be held October 29-31, 2001 in Washington, D.C., at the Marriott Wardman Park. Also, USENIX (www.usenix.org) has a security conference in August. And SANS (www.sans.org) does security training.
