Encrypting traffic between Windows and Solaris servers

I am looking to encrypt all traffic between two servers: Solaris 2.8 and Windows 2000. There is an application running on the Solaris machine which is performing lookups on the Active Directory running on Windows 2000. Unfortunately, the application running on Solaris does not support Secure Sockets Layer. What are my options for encrypting traffic? Virtual private network (VPN)? Internet Protocol Security (IPsec)? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

An IPsec VPN on the Solaris side could work with the Windows 2000 IPsec implementation.
