Q

Ensuring that a system is bug-free

If my navdefs are up to date and my scan is clean, how can I be sure there are no bugs in my system that the scan did not catch?

You can't. Antivirus scanners look for known viruses and new ones that look similar to existing ones they know about. The objective to keep in mind is that you are reducing your risks, not eliminating them. Running an up-to-date antivirus product is the first step. Not downloading software from sites that are possibly suspect is another good one.
