Port searching

In this Ask the Expert Q&A our network security expert dicusses whether it is possible to search for a port while it is in use.

Can I search for a particular port to see if it's being used in a network?
Yes, just make sure you have your company's approval. While port scanning is not illegal, it is appropriate to gain approval. There are tools, such as NMAP and SuperScan that will allow you to scan any of the 65,000 TCP or UDP ports.
