Q

Removing an infected system from a network

Is it a good idea to immediately take a computer off of the network if you suspect it has a virus?
Yes, this is a good idea. The best way is to actually remove the cable connection (if not a wireless network). Once all traces have been cleaned off and an update to the antivirus protection has been put in place, you can re-connect.

This is also a good time to check that the hard drives are not being shared on the network in an insecure fashion.
