How can I disallow e-mail attachments to be sent from Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express, on a Windows 98 SE PC, in a LAN environment? We are trying to prevent sensitive material from leaving a system that needs to have e-mail capabilities.
You cannot do it on the desktops, but can on the e-mail gateway system by employing virus-scanning and content-screening software. Symantec, Network Associates, Trend Microsystems and Baltimore Technologies (Mimesweeper) have products that run on firewalls or e-mail gateways that can do this. Sendmail Version 8.11 also allows you to strip attachments.
