Q

Tool to list open ports

Is there a Win2000 tool that will list all of my open ports in a cmd box, the way ipconfig lists the ip numbers, etc. of my network connections? If not, can you recommend any resources on how to write my own in C, C++ or Java?

I am not aware of any such tool. The easiest way to find the open ports is to have another computer run the tool called NMAP on your Win2000 machine. You can find the freeware NMAP tool at http://www.insecure.org/nmap/ You will need a Linux (or other Unix) machine to run this tool, but it is a good idea to have a Unix-based security testing machine anyway. You will also want to download other good security tools such as the Nessus and SARA security vulnerability scanners.
