QUESTION POSED ON: 27 April 2001
I'm doing a comparison of security policies for an undergraduate assignment, but my Internet searches yield mostly university and government policies. Is there a way of searching the Web that will give me a broader range of results (that is both legal and ethical)?

I would be very surprised if you found anything other than legal disclaimers or privacy policies available on the Web. It would not be in the corporation's best interest to publish their internal workings through a public medium, as it increases their vulnerability by providing detailed information on how they operate. For example, if they published detailed information regarding user-ID naming standards and password criteria, it is an open invitation to hackers. If your university has relationships (and it probably does) with corporations, ask them directly for copies of their policies. (Be sure to sanitize the information.)
