QUESTION POSED ON: 12 September 2001
What tools would you use or recommend to check the security of a Unix OS running CheckPoint FW1? I have and use nmap at this time. Are there any others that you would use?

There are commercial tools available from ISS, Network Associates and also
a freeware one, Nessus, available from www.nessus.org. You should also look
at the usual security Web sites, SecurityFocus.com, etc. for other options,
too.
Note that all scanners can only test for things they know about. They are
like virus scanners in this respect; none of these tools protect
you from new problems, and an old version of the tool may be worse than
useless if you think you're safe and you aren't.
