QUESTION POSED ON: 12 August 2002
I am very interested in computer/Web security but do not know where to get started or what schools may be teaching these skills. I am just wondering if you could point me in the right direction. I have been a tech specialist/LAN administrator for the last 14 years, and now I am supposed to "guard" our Web server from outside threats!

Thanks for your recent e-mail about computer and Web security topics. One good way to get started will be available later this fall from CompTIA, in the form of their upcoming Security+ certification. More information on this topic is available at http://www.comptia.org/certification/securityplus/index.htm.

For a more Web-centric beginning to your activities, you might consider pursuing the CIW Security Professional exam. It's more aimed at securing Web pages and sites, and it is also a good entry-level program to get you up to speed on security matters. For more information on this topic, please visit: http://www.ciwcertified.com/exams/1d0470.asp?comm=home&llm=4.

Beyond these entry level certifications, you have lots of further options to pursue. Take a look at my two most recent TechTarget survey tips on vendor-neutral and vendor-specific security certifications for a great deal more information to ponder and pursue. I especially recommend the TICSA CISSP, and SANS-GIAC programs, among the many offerings you will find therein.

Good luck with your further studies.
