I can't imagine letting HIPAA get in the way of printing PHI since that has to be done. At a minimum, you should implement some basic physical security best practices such as placing the printer in an inconspicuous place protected from the public. You may also wish to enable banner pages in your printer drivers to help separate print jobs when they come out. Definitely make it policy for employees to immediately retrieve any printouts containing PHI from the printer. Also, shred any printouts that are not filed away, given to patients or are no longer needed.
