GFI Software acquires Sunbelt, VIPRE antimalware

GFI Software buys Sunbelt Software and plans to integrate Sunbelt's VIPRE antimalware product to complement its current Web and email security offerings.

GFI Software has acquired Sunbelt Software, allowing the Malta-based Web and email security company to integrate Sunbelt's VIPRE antimalware product set into GFI's current line of email security and Web security offerings.

"We see this investment in Sunbelt and its VIPRE technology as an excellent opportunity to increase our install base, drive the software globally through our international partner channel and also build our consumer market," said Walter Scott, CEO of GFI.

Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

"On the technology side, the acquisition allows us to expand into several areas, which we believe are essential for us to grow as a company," said Alex Eckelberry, CEO of the Tampa Bay, Fl. provider of endpoint- and server-based security software, via email. According to Eckelberry, these areas include vulnerability assessment, patch management, data leakage prevention, hosted/cloud-based technologies, and solutions for MSPs.

No specific plans have been made yet in terms of product integration strategies, but Eckelberry says they are working with the GFI team to identify areas where the company's technologies would complement their offerings.

The assets of Sunbelt's software distribution business, which began 16 years ago, is separate from the technology side of the company and will be divested into a separate entity. The company is exploring other strategic partnerships.
