Sober-ing month for worms in November

The Sober-A and Mimail worms were the most prevalent pieces of malicious code in November, according to the leading antivirus software vendors.

November was an interesting month for malicious code as multiple Mimail variants struck and some worms from past months remained strong.

Sober-A, which topped Sophos' list for November, arrived in the waning days of October but spread strongly into the month. The worm spread via e-mail using both German and English subject lines and an attachment that purports to be a fix for a bogus new worm. When executed, the worm searches the infected system for e-mail addresses to mail itself using a self-contained Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) engine.

"Although Mimail made five appearances in this month's chart -- totaling more than a quarter of all reports -- it is the bilingual Sober worm that has caused the most problems for computer users this month," said Chris Belthoff, senior security analyst at Lynnfield, Mass., Sophos, Inc.

While Gibe-C topped Central Command's list, Mimail variants dominated, said Steven Sundermeier, vice president of products and services at Central Command, Inc. "The Mimail family occupied six of the 12 positions and accounted for 27.2% of all confirmed virus occurrences," he said in a statement.
