Snort fans will soon have the ability to illustrate their technical prowess to HR without drowning them in techno-babble.

Sourcefire Inc., a Columbia, Md.-based provider of intrusion-prevention systems, announced the upcoming availability of online training and certifications for its Sourcefire 3D System and the open source intrusion-detection system, Snort.

The certifications will be available Aug. 16 in three tracks. Candidates for the Sourcefire Certified Professional (SFCP) must demonstrate knowledge of the latest version of the Sourcefire 3D System. The Snort Certified Professional (SnortCP) tests candidates' knowledge of Snort, and the Sourcefire Certified Expert covers both the SFCP and SnortCP.

According to Karen Paulson, Vice President of Education, the certification exams consist of 200 randomly pulled questions. Candidates have 2 ½ hours to complete each exam online.

"Sourcefire created the certifications to drive industry awareness while creating metrics for individuals and employers to gauge competency," said Paulson.

Sourcefire's online courses, which will also begin rolling out in August, cover the same content as the company's instructor-led courses at almost half the cost. Students can access the materials on demand for 60 days and take assessments at the end of each module and at the end of training to evaluate their progress. Like the instructor-led courses, students can earn 16 credit hours of continuing professional education credits from (ISC)2.
