WASHINGTON -- VeriSign Inc. and AirMagnet Inc. will provide IT shops with intrusion prevention for wireless networks. At the 2007 Gartner IT Security Summit Monday, the security vendors unveiled the VeriSign Wireless Intrusion Prevention Service (IPS), the result of their partnership.

In an interview with SearchSecurity.com, Mike Denning, vice president of VeriSign Security Services, billed it as the first comprehensive service designed to shield corporate wireless networks from theft and other security threats.

IPS information and news:
McAfee launches IPS for 10g networks, but is IT ready? McAfee unveiled a new IPS offering for 10-gigabit Ethernet networks and announced the upgrade and integration of several other products. One analyst offers a mixed assessment.

Run, don't walk, toward IPS security: What you will learn from this tip: Learn why organizations should deploy an intrusion-prevention system (IPS) ASAP. Intrusion-detection systems (IDS) and intrusion-prevention systems (IPS) are a significant growth area in the security market today.

"Through a new strategic partnership with AirMagnet, VeriSign Managed Security Services (MSS) maximizes the ability of intrusion prevention technology to protect both wireless and wired networks," he said. "Mobility in the workforce is a driving factor. Companies are trying to give workers greater data access via wireless networks and they're hungry for a secure way to do all this. Our solution is to merge wireless and IPS capabilities."

The need for better wireless security is illustrated in the steady string of corporate data breaches since early 2005, he said, using the recent TJX Companies Inc. security breach as an example.

The TJX incident exposed at least 45.7 million credit and debit card holders to identity fraud, and it's widely believed that it began with the hacking of a Wi-Fi network at one of the retail giant's stores.

By combining AirMagnet technology with VeriSign Teraguard, Denning said, companies can now integrate IPS for both wireless and wired networks. The product also makes use of VeriSign's iDefense global network of threat experts, he added.

"As more organizations make wireless technology a vital element in how business is done, VeriSign Wireless IPS will help ensure that their business is secure and meets compliance requirements," AirMagnet CEO Dean Au said in a statement.

Rachna Ahlawat, research director of wireless at Gartner Inc., said wireless LANs are entering the mainstream but there's a shortage of skills for managing the networks and threats surrounding them. "There is a need in the market for MSS Providers (MSSPs) that can extend services to include WLAN's security and management," she said in a statement.
