Barracuda Networks moved quietly last month to capitalize on the growing demand for Web application security tools by acquiring Web firewall appliance maker NetContinuum for an undisclosed amount.

There will be a ton of synergy with NetContinuum with both support and manufacturing.
Dean Drako
president and CEO, Barracuda Networks

Barracuda completed the acquisition July 19. Terms of the deal were not released.

NetContinuum makes Web application firewalls and application gateway appliances that protect Web sites from hackers. Barracuda president and CEO Dean Drako said the ability to protect Web sites from remote attackers had been missing from the Barracuda product set. NetContinuum's appliance will continue to be sold as a separate product, he said.

"We'll be leveraging NetContinuum's infrastructure so it has a similar interface and similar support mechanisms," Drako said in an interview with SearchSecurity.com. "We believe in this extension of our product line. There will be a ton of synergy with NetContinuum with both support and manufacturing."

Drako said his company's significant manufacturing investments will allow the company to scale the product downward, making it affordable for small businesses. The appliances are also aimed at enterprises seeking security solutions in the wake of the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards (PCI DSS), a set of rules imposed by credit card makers to protect cardholder data.

"It's been a big push by the credit card industry and we believe interest in this product category is going to go way up in moving forward," Drako said.

Drako said Barracuda will work to improve the NetContinuum user interface and ultimately sell the appliances as the Barracuda Web App Controller. NetContinuum had offices in Santa Clara, Calif., and India. About 70 employees from the Santa Clara office have moved to Barracuda's Campbell, Calif., headquarters.
