EMC Corp. announced that it intends to acquire Configuresoft Inc., in a deal that adds the vendor's server configuration and change management software to its line of storage and infrastructure products.

Financial details of the acquisition were not disclosed. The transaction is expected to close in June. EMC said it would move Configuresoft into its Resource Management Software Group.

In recent years Colorado Springs, Calif.-based Configuresoft touted its ability to detect and monitor the configuration of virtualization deployments. The software uses industry best practices and guidelines, displaying whether an organization's systems meet specific regulations. The software works well to help managers cope with VM sprawl, said Andi Mann, vice president of research at Enterprise Management Associates.

McAfee to acquire Solidcore Systems for whitelisting

"It can discover all physical servers and all virtual servers running on top of them and all configurations in VM and physical environments as for a single source of truth," Mann said. "That's extremely valuable when it comes to understanding your environment."

Mann said the acquisition makes sense for EMC, since it has a close partnership with Configuresoft since 2008 when it began branding the Configuresoft's Enterprise Configuration Manager (ECM) and Configuration Intelligent Analytics as the as EMC Server Configuration Manager and Configuration Analytics Manager.

"This has been a hot market with lots of activity going on driven by compliance spending," Mann said. "This marriage has already existed in some ways. EMC and Configuresoft fit nicely together as EMC has various components around system management. It's a solid data center player."

With EMC's acquisition of Configuresoft, Tripwire remains one of the last large independent players in the configuration management market, Mann said. Whitelisting vendor Solidcore Systems Inc., which supported control management features, was acquired by McAfee Inc. earlier this month. Other vendors, such as Oracle Corp., IBM and Hewlett-Packard Co. have some configuration tools built into their products.

"Customers are looking for new tools and processes to help them more effectively manage the virtualized data center," Chris Gahagan EMC's senior vice president of resource management software said in a statement. "With Configuresoft, we're gaining market-leading server configuration management solutions, giving customers the power they need to fully automate the data center in compliance with new physical and virtual best practice policies."

In a letter to Configuresoft customers, Configuresoft CEO E. Alexander Goldstein said the acquisition made sense for both vendors and promised that EMC would continue to support and invest in future development initiatives.

"For Configuresoft, the acquisition will immediately expand our business and technical resources to accelerate our ability to deliver compelling products that meet your needs," Goldstein said. "As valued customers and partners who have invested significant time and capital in Configuresoft's technology, I wanted to assure you that EMC is dedicated to investing in and furthering Configuresoft's product capabilities and scope."
