Network security company WatchGuard Technologies Inc. has acquired BorderWare Technologies, an email and Web security firm.

Terms of the deal, announced Tuesday, were not disclosed. Both companies are privately held.

Seattle-based WatchGuard is known for its unified threat management appliances, which include its WatchGuard LiveSecurityService for support and maintenance. BorderWare Technologies of Toronto, Canada, provides an email and Web security appliance and a cloud-based solution.

"The rise of blended threats has fueled increasing interest in messaging and Web security, and at the same time the fastest growing form factors within the secure messaging market segment are appliances and then secure messaging services," said Paula Musich, senior analyst at Washington, D.C.-based research firm Current Analysis Inc. "And so with the BorderWare Security Platform appliance and the BorderWare ReputationAuthority in-the-cloud service, WatchGuard now has an opportunity to capitalize on the growth in one of the real bright spots in the security market."

WatchGuard said it has no immediate plans to change BorderWare's product offerings, customer support or channel programs.

"This acquisition is extremely complementary and will allow WatchGuard to accelerate and further deliver on its vision of extending security solutions to protect corporate data, networks and applications," WatchGuard CEO Joe Wang said in a prepared statement.

Last week, security giant McAfee Inc. announced that it acquired email security SaaS vendor MX Logic Inc. for $140 million in cash.
