We asked security experts to give us their industry predictions for the New Year. Here's what Ed Tittel had to say.
2002: The year security goes big-time
Given the horrific events of 2001 and the numerous highly-publicized
security exploits that also took place this year -- think Melissa, Red
Worm, Sircam and so forth -- 2002 will be a year of astonishing growth in
the security field for many companies and organizations. I predict that
the heightened awareness of and concern for security established in
2001 will be translated into more security dollars in IT budgets in 2002,
backed up with more activity, implementation and routine security work
than ever before.
Because of this upswing in spending and attention, look for the
following trends to emerge:
Increased business for managed security service providers.
Increased development and implementation of security policies.
Increased spending on security training and certification on the
people side, and increased spending on security systems, services,
software and hardware on the IT infrastructure side.
Increased cooperation between business and government in handling
security incidents in the wake of September 11.
Increased concern about privacy and confidentiality in the security
and civil liberties communities.
All in all, I think it's going to be the first of many boom years for
the security trade, with plenty of opportunities for knowledgeable
professionals to excel and for interested professionals to get trained
and up to speed on a fascinating, ever-changing technology area. I'm
excited!
