Data center interconnect market: Enterprises, providers fuel growth

The data center interconnect market is poised for significant growth, thanks to a number of factors altering the IT landscape -- including the growing use of cloud services, the massive proliferation of data, the increasing adoption of hyper-converged data center designs and the evolution of network traffic behavior. In fact, some analysts at Ovum Research predict data center interconnect market revenue will experience a compound annual growth rate of 10.5% over the next few years, reaching $4.2 billion by 2019.

As long as information generation continues to increase -- a virtual inevitability -- organizations of all shapes and sizes will find themselves in need of faster, more reliable, higher-capacity connections. In this edition of Network Evolution, we examine how demand from both service providers and enterprises for speedy, scalable interconnect links are driving upgrades -- whether from 1 Gbps to 10 Gbps, or from 10 Gbps to 100 Gbps -- and moving the data center interconnect market forward.

Also in this issue, we explore Cisco's recent updates to the Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE) written exam, and consider whether those changes will help keep the certification relevant in the era of cloud, the internet of things and programmable networks. IT pros on both sides of the CCIE fence weigh in on the ongoing debate. We also head back to the classroom to find out how American universities are tackling the question of software-defined networking education, and what that means for the network managers of tomorrow.
