Core elements to prevent business continuity, disaster recovery problems DATE: 08 Sep 2009 In conclusion to this video series, Andre Gold discusses the importance of communication to avoid business continuity and disaster recovery planning problems, and defines the core elements needed for a successful BCP and DR efforts. Now the last "gotcha" that we will discuss today is what I call the triple whammy. It reflects a lack of cash, a lack of executive support, and a lack of effective communication planning. First and foremost, if you don't have cash, it is going to be real hard to go out there and identity a location, invest in technology and fund all the aspects of business continuity planning and disaster recovery. Second of all, if you don't have the support of your executive team, how are you going to understand what is the most critical business process that is associated with your firm? Third, once again, is communication, communication, communication. You have to have a detailed instruction plan and be able to know what to do in an event that a disaster actually occurs. Now, at the end of the day, if you address those core elements that we talked about and you really have focused on identifying the firm's key business processes and you have a great and established communication plan, you will have a nice, little disaster recovery and business continuity plan that will walk you through step-by-step who to call and what actions to take in the event that disaster actually does occur.
