NSA’s Sager on trends of 2011 security breaches, advanced persistent threat hype

If it seems like 2011 security breaches have become more prevalent and more severe than in years past, you’re not alone.

“The escalation in both the number [and] severity of loss is really starting to get people’s attention,” said Tony W. Sager, chief operating officer of the Information Assurance Directorate of the NSA. “So people start to think about not, ‘How do I defend myself?’ but, ‘How does my industry defend itself?’”

In this interview from the second annual NSA Trusted Computing Conference in Orlando, Sager discusses the big-picture message from this year’s major security breaches, why advanced persistent threat hype isn’t fully justified and the infosec lessons he’s learned from his wife and kids.
