About the White Paper:
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 was enacted by the U.S. Congress to simplify administrative processes for health care organizations, while at the same time setting standards for electronic health care transactions, security and privacy. Since its passage, HIPAA has paved the way for the development and marketing of a plethora of new technologies designed to help health plans, health care clearinghouses and health care providers comply with the act. The information security industry has been no exception to this rule. In essence, the confusion over defining what are the most appropriate and cost-effective tools for achieving HIPAA compliance from a security perspective begs the question: what do HIPAA's security requirements truly require of health care organizations? This paper aims to clear up some of the confusion surrounding this topic.
