Far too many viruses in January 2003

Date Published:
01 JAN 2003
About the White Paper:
The beginning of this year saw far too many new malwares and variants released in the wild: Naith (alias Avril or Lirva) and Sobig hit the Internet at roughly the same time (January 8th and 9th respectively). Then came SQLSlammer, a worm that heavily struck the Internet on January 25. New variants of Yaha, Opaserv and the infamous ExploreZip were also spotted in the wild and had no problems spreading in just a couple of weeks. The malwares were included in the signatures databases of the most important antivirus software. However, the number of infection reports has grown constantly even in the case of Sobig -- a rudimentary piece of work. Conclusion: a large number of companies and people owning antivirus software do not update it on a regular basis.
