HP’s other security announcement

When writing about HP Tuesday, our main focus was on its acquisition of SPI Dynamics and what it means for the industry as a whole. But HP did make another major security announcement this week that could broadly affect its customers.

At the HP Technology Forum, the the company unveiled its Secure Advantage portfolio of servers, storage, software and services to, according to its press release, “help customers securely share information, improve identity management and compliance controls, ensure business continuity and defend against network attacks.”

Scott Stallard, senior vice president and general manager of HP’s Enterprise Storage and Servers division, said the new offering “delivers integrated security into heterogeneous IT infrastructures to help customers of all sizes optimize business outcomes.”

Of course, most of the public’s interest right now is on HP’s SPI Dynamics acquisition because it follows a larger trend of big IT infrastructure vendors buying up security companies to integrate more security into the product line. One thing to watch will be what happens to SPI Dynamic’s talent pool as things shake out. As we reported Tuesday, some users are worried about whether HP will make smart use of SPI’s technology or let it languish as other vendors have done with acquired technology in the past.

As we’ve seen, the quality of a security tool and related services can vary widely after an acquisition.
