Juniper launches mobile security suite

Juniper Networks on Tuesday unveiled a software suite that company executives touted as the first product to provide integrated security and secure connectivity across all types of mobile devices.

The Junos Pulse Security Suite includes antivirus, antispam, a personal firewall, device monitoring and control, and loss and theft prevention. It’s the first to provide security for a range of mobile platforms: Android, BlackBerry, Symbian, Windows Mobile, and Apple IOS, Mark Bauhaus, executive vice president and general manager of the service layer technologies group at Juniper, said at a launch event in San Francisco.

For enterprises, the suite allows employees to use their mobile devices in the workplace without putting  sensitive corporate data at risk, he said. The product combines authentication and encryption to provide secure access and connectivity and allows administrators to enforce policies across all devices attached to the network, Bauhaus said.

He cited research commissioned by Juniper that surveyed 6,000 consumers, which showed that about 44% of smart phone and tablet computer users use their devices for both personal and business purposes. Eighty-one percent report accessing their company’s network with their devices without permission.

Juniper also announced that it opened a research center based in Columbus, Ohio dedicated to tracking mobile threats and vulnerabilities.

Juniper CEO Kevin Johnson said the number of smart phones and other Internet-connected mobile devices is exploding, opening up “significant implications from a security standpoint.”

Waiting for mobile threats to grow is a mistake, he said. “The bad actors that develop malware are going to do nothing but become more sophisticated…History will tell us what we saw in PCs will hit mobile platforms,” Johnson said.

Enterprise pricing for the Junos Plus Mobile Security Suite starts at $72 per device, per year.
