Malwarebytes software

Contributor(s): Kevin Beaver

Malwarebytes is a cross-platform anti-malware program that detects and removes malware and other rogue software. Malwarebytes works alongside other anti-malware programs, particularly in the free version. The paid version (Malwarebytes Premium) allows for real-time file and web protection, scheduled scans, and can detect rogue apps on Android and Chrome OS. Additionally, the paid version can stop ransomware and allows for automatic updates.

Malwarebytes was originally released in January 2006. The product has since grown to many different platforms with different features. The free version of Malwarebytes is not intended for use as the primary anti-malware solution given its limited features. Users can scan their systems whenever they choose, but the program will not do it automatically. However, the free version is still effective at removing most malware. Malwarebytes Premium is the recommended solution for an automated, real-time anti-malware program that can be used in a standalone fashion.

Malwarebytes enterprise solution for malware protection is Malwarebytes for Teams, Malwarebytes Endpoint Protection and Malwarebytes Endpoint Protection and Response. These business-focused versions offer additional features such as centralized management (cloud or on-premise), the rolling back of files impacting by ransomware encryption, and advanced technical support.

Requirements

Malwarebytes is available for Windows, macOS, Chrome OS, Android, and iOS. Malwarebytes requires Windows XP SP3 or later to run on Windows, OS X 10.10 or higher to run on Macs, Android 4.4 or higher to run on Android devices, iOS 11 or later to run on iOS devices, and a Chrome device that supports the Google Play Store to run on Chrome OS.

Cost

Malwarebytes Premium starts at $39.99/year for one device for personal use with discounts for more devices. Malwarebytes Teams is $119.97/year for three devices with support up to 20 endpoints. The next-level business product, Malwarebytes Endpoint Protection, starts at $699.99/year for ten devices. Pricing for the highest-level product, Endpoint Protection and Response, is not published and must be obtained through the Malwarebytes sales team.
