This week's Risk & Repeat podcast looks at the recent cancellations of Black Hat USA 2020 and DEF CON 28 and what their virtual replacements will try to accomplish.

This week's Risk & Repeat podcast looks at the recent announcements that both Black Hat USA 2020 and DEF CON 28 are canceled.

The two infosec conferences, which were both scheduled for early August in Las Vegas, were changed to virtual events because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Jeff Moss, founder of both conferences and current DEF CON board member, said in an official announcement that the decision to cancel the live event and move to a virtual version was made nearly a month ago but more time was needed for organizers to "navigate the process" for canceling such a large event.

In this episode, SearchSecurity editors Rob Wright and Alex Culafi discuss the Black Hat and DEF CON cancellations and the outlook for future technology and infosec conferences scheduled for the rest of the year, as well as 2021. They also discuss their experiences with recent virtual events amid the pandemic, how Black Hat and DEF CON plan to replicate the experience of the live events, and what will be lost with virtual events.
